About Core Structures

Core Structures is led by Gary Povirk, who holds a Ph.D. in solid mechanics from Brown University, completed postdoctoral training at MIT, and received an NSF CAREER Award while a professor at Yale University. He has 25 years of nuclear fuel experience at the Naval Nuclear Laboratory, TerraPower, Elysium Industries, and the Idaho National Laboratory, including leading fuel performance modeling at NNL and TerraPower. He was lead author on patent applications for two distinct fuel system designs irradiated in the Advanced Test Reactor, one of which was the subject of congressional reports and a review by the JASON defense advisory group. At INL, he was instrumental in developing the FAST irradiation test, now widely used for metallic fuel testing and capable of reducing irradiation times by a factor of four. Dr. Povirk is also the author of HeavyMetal, the multiphysics finite element code used in the benchmark cases and the fuel simulations found here.
